At Wilmington Child and Family Psychiatry, we believe in a comprehensive, holistic approach to mental health care that integrates psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and behavioral management into every visit. We take a strong biopsychosocial perspective, understanding that mental health is influenced by the interaction of genetic, psychological, and social factors. By combining evidence-based psychotherapy techniques with thoughtful medication management, we aim to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms. Our goal is to help you gain insight, develop coping strategies, and foster resilience, while addressing the root causes of distress. We prioritize a personalized, compassionate approach that supports your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
This telephone call helps prospective new patients and Dr. Fawcett explore whether this clinic will be a good fit. During this short consultation call we will discuss clinic policies and determine appropriateness in moving forward with comprehensive new patient evaluation. If you are or believe you are experiencing a medical or psychiatric emergency, including suicidal or homicidal thinking, side effects to medication, or any other urgent or time-sensitive matter in which you need an immediate response, do not use this service. Instead call 911 or go to your closest emergency room.
This prospective consultation call typically lasts about 15 minutes.
An initial psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment to gather important information about a patient's emotional, psychological, and physical health. It serves as the foundation for creating a treatment plan and diagnosing any mental health conditions. During this consultation, Dr. Fawcett will ask about your current concerns, symptoms, and any relevant medical or mental health history. We will also explore your family history, social environment, and any significant life events that may be affecting your mental well-being. Based on the evaluation, Dr. Fawcett will discuss potential diagnoses and treatment options, which could include therapy, medication, or referrals to other specialists.
This evaluation typically lasts about 60 to 90 minutes and sets the foundation for creating a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
A medication management visit is a follow-up appointment where Dr. Fawcett checks in on how you're responding to prescribed medications. During the visit, the clinician will review your current medications, including dosages and any side effects you're experiencing. They'll ask how the medications are affecting your mood, symptoms, and daily life. If needed, adjustments to the medication or dosage may be made to improve effectiveness or minimize side effects.
Dr. Fawcett will also discuss your progress towards your personal treatment goals and address any concerns you have. These visits typically last about 25 to 55 minutes and are scheduled regularly to ensure you're receiving the most appropriate care for your mental health needs.
Patients prescribed controlled substances are required to have a visit follow up visit at a minimum of every 3 months.
Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, is a treatment where Dr. Fawcett helps you explore and address emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges. During sessions, you’ll discuss your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and confidential environment. Dr. Fawcett uses various techniques to help you gain insight, develop coping strategies, and work through issues like anxiety, depression, stress, or relationship difficulties.
The approach to psychotherapy can vary based on your needs. Dr. Fawcett utilizes elements of psychodynamic therapy, psychoanalytic therapy, supportive therapy, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness techniques. While Dr. Fawcett utilizes components of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in her therapy practice if you are looking for structured DBT or CBT sessions we can help you find referrals for a therapist in the local area that will better fit your needs.
For children Dr. Fawcett primarily utilizes psychodynamic play therapy.
Sessions typically last 55 minutes and can be scheduled weekly, depending on your treatment plan.
Having a child with learning difficulties or emotional and behavioral challenges can be stressful both at school and at home. The first step in supporting your child is a comprehensive evaluation to identify underlying factors such as ADHD, anxiety, or depression, that may affect their academic performance and social interactions.
Through a combination of therapy, skill-building strategies, and, when appropriate, medication management, we work closely with children and their families to enhance focus, regulate emotions, and develop coping mechanisms for success at school and home.
Diagnosis is just one piece of the puzzle—navigating the school system and advocating for the right support is another. We can assist you in advocating for assessment within the school system, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 Plans, provide guidance on fostering a supportive learning environment at home, and help you to collaborate with teachers and school counselors to implement tailored interventions. Our goal is to ensure your child receives the necessary accommodations to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
